About Alanna Gray

Alanna Gray (the creative alias of Beth Gray-Witney) is an experimental multi-media artist and textile designer. She uses her imaginative and sensory creations as a medium through which to express feelings and communicate ideas.

In awe of the natural world and interested in subjects including biology, geography and philosophy, she explores and interprets these themes through a playful process of investigation, often combining several materials and processes at once in the search for harmony between nature and technology, physical and intangible, old and new. Particularly fascinated by self-similarity within nature, repeat patterns and sacred shapes, she is interested in exploring the relationship between the internal and external, above and below, self and other.

Having recently completed her degree in Textile Design at Falmouth University, she has developed skills in both hand operated processes and modern technologies and software. As a result, her inquisitive approach often combines traditional methods and timeless subject matter with contemporary and forward-thinking approaches to material, process and function.

Being passionate about conscious design and promoting sustainability within a

throw-away culture, she strives to use found objects and reclaimed materials, enjoying the challenges and possibilities this can provide. She is interested in how her work could fit within a wide variety of applications including exhibitions, fashion and costume design, jewellery, installation, editorial shoots and film, considering the built environment and human body alike a canvas on which to explore her ideas. As a result, she has come to redefine textile design for herself, developing a style and creative process that is unique to her.
